1954 British Empire Medal (Civil) to Herbert Hoggard, from Bridlington, Yorkshire
The BEM was announced in the London Gazette dated 10th June 1954 as Foreman-in-Charge John Deheer Ltd, Bridlington. With copied extract from Hull Daily Mail, "Mr Hoggard joined the firm 30 years ago on a month's trial. After 20 years Mr J.M. Deheer discovered that Mr Hoggard was still legally only on a month's trial. Mr Deheer told the Hull Daily Mail that he regarded Mr Hoggard as belonging to that class of conscientious workmen who are fast dying out. Mr Hoggard has had little home life as he is constantly sent to isolated sites. Much of his work has been in constructing bombing targets on various beaches in the British Isles. He has travelled as far afield as Ross & Cromarty and the Isle of Sheppey, and has at times worked on sites riddled with un-explosive bombs. He has had bombs dropped near him from aircraft, and eventually was issued with a Verey light pistol to signal to aircraft to keep off. Mr Hoggard, now 72, and is still happily at work."
