John Kunhardt (or de Kunhardt) was born on 2nd August 1875, he received his medical education at St Mary's Hospital in London. He received a commission in the Indian Medical Service in 1902 and saw active service with the 58th Native Field Hospital during the Somaliland Campaign 1902-04.
In July 1905 he was promoted Captain and married Nora Sophia Mildred. Tragically, she died suddenly at Jubbulpore on 4th May 1906 aged 30. From 1910 John was a member of the Indian Plague Research Committee, and wrote a number of papers in the Indian Journal of Medical Research.
During WW1 he served with the No. 6 Field Hospital on the North West Frontier.
