Sergeant Alfred Sidney Stones, of Leaden Roding, Dunmow, Essex, enlisted for service with the 1st Battalion Essex Regiment in October 1904, and after early service in India and Burma (1906-08) he fought on the Western Front. Research suggests that he was twice wounded in action, on 1st July 1916, 1st Day of the Battle of the Somme (severe gunshot wound left shoulder) and again on 16 February 1917 (severe gunshot wounds left arm).
