Walter Nelson Nicholls was born on 16th July 1881 in Toronto, Ontario.
He joined the CEF on 22nd September 1914 having seen five months
previous service as a Lieutenant in the Q.O.R. He saw service in
France and Belgium from February 1915 to July 1915 and became a
Captain in January 1916. He was a Captain and Quartermaster in
the Toronto Regiment from 12th March 1923 and became a Major on
22nd August 1924.
On 27th June 1940 authority was given for the formation of a Second
Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Canada under the command of
Colonel D.H.C. Mason and early in July of that year he selected Major
