The 5th Battalion came out of the Midlothian Rifle Volunteers (Leith & Corstophine) and was formed as the 5th Battalion in April 1888. The blue helmet was only worn between 1888 and 1905 when the battalion adopted the Kilmarnock Bonnet.

The Battalion's HQ was at Steads Place Leith and latterly Dalmeny Street Leith Walk.
