The 4th S.A.M.R. took Raman’s Drift in the early days of the German SWA campaign after a
forced march from Steinkopf. Smallwood volunteered for overseas service in 1918 reaching
France on 31 October 1918 being posted to “D” Company, 1st S.A.I. on 11 November 1911 –
the day the war ended! He was discharged from the S.A. Police as being medically unfit in
1931 having originally joined the Transvaal Police in 1904. GVF
