James Edward Smith was born on 2nd July 1881 in Liverpool, England, he joined the CEF on 9th November 1914. His occupation was given as Bricklayer / Plasterer. He was wounded by a Trench Mortar Shell to right foot, left hand and back, at St. Eloi on 25th June 1916 resulting in his medical discharge once back in Vancouver.
