With copy of service record showing that John Kirkland was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire on 16th August 1875 and was an Upholsterer by trade when he joined the Royal Navy in Sept 1894 for 12 years service. He was discharged to pension in November 1904 but served very briefly on shore in 1914 before being discharged again.
HMS Naiad was an Apollo-class protected cruiser of the Royal Navy which served from 1892 to 1919.
