Punniar Star 1843 to Williams, 50th Queen’s Own Regiment

John Williams was born in Bermondsey, London, and attested for the 50th Regiment of Foot at Queen’s Square, London, on 1 March 1838. He served with the Regiment in Australia for 2 years and 28 days, and then in India for 5 years and 165 days, and was promoted Corporal on 1 June 1843. He saw active service during the Gwalior campaign at the action at Punniar on 29 December 1843, and subsequently, having been promoted Sergeant on 15 October 1845, throughout the First Sikh War, being present in the actions at Moodkee, Ferozeshuhur, Aliwal, and Sobraon, being wounded in the latter action on 10 February 1846. He was discharged on account of his wounds, no longer physically fit, on 22 January 1867, after 9 years and 106 days’ service. P.N. - no paperwork is present.
