Belgium - Commemorative Medal for the Africa Campaign, Silver, 1914-1916

The Commemorative Medal for the Africa Campaign was awarded to Belgian military personnel in recognition of service in Africa from 1914 to 1918 when Belgian troops engaged German troops in combat near German East Africa and the eastern borders of the Belgian Congo.

Recipients who served in the 1917 campaign resulting in the capture of Mahenge, Tanzania, were awarded a "MAHENGE" clasp.

The Commemorative Medal for the African Campaigns was instituted on February 21, 1917 and awarded to Belgian forces who engaged German troops in and around the latter’s African colonies of Cameroon, Tanganyika and South-West Africa. This is the first version of the medal with the dates 1914-1916; a second version bears the dates 1914-1917. The names on the reverse are those of the territories and places where engagements occurred. The numbers involved were relatively small, making the medal difficult to find.
