Military Medal winner's GSM 1918 Palestine Medal to 4745742 Pte A. Handley Y. & L. R.

Near Extremely fine.

Albert Handley was killed in action as L/Sgt with 6th Battalion on 12th October 1944 and is buried in Assisi War Cemetery.

His Military Medal was awarded "For outstanding devotion to duty and personal leadership. On 29 Jan 44 L/Sgt Handley was commanding the leading Pl of C Coy in the attack on Mt Turlito. After a long and tiring approach march he encountered the enemy near the summit, L/Sgt Handley immediately took action to engage the enemy. Two of his Pl were killed by small arms fire but in spite of this L/Sgt Handley kept control of his secs and succeeded in keeping the enemy pinned. He immediately provided information to his Coy Comd who was then able to deploy a second Pl round a flank and captured 9 P.W. and killed one German. Throughout the action L/Sgt Handley was suffering from a painful septic hand which would have kept him out of the operation had he reported sick. By his outstanding devotion to duty, personal leadership and quick grasp of the situation L/Sgt Handley did much to assist in the capture of Mt Turlito."

He was also wounded in the fighting on Sicily with 1st Battalion on 6th August 1943. With copied MM citation, CWGC and casualty lists.
