Joseph Davis was born at Hull on 6 September 1881 and was a cap maker when he joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker Second Class on 10 October 1899.

On the outbreak of the First World War, he was serving on Hercules as Acting Chief Stoker before being posted to Victory II. Davis was next posted to Opal on 15 March 1916, remaining with her until 1 April 1917.

H.M.S. Opal was an M-Class destroyer of the 12th Flotilla, which suffered no known damage or casualties at Jutland.

He was shore discharged on 9 October 1921 and paid a war gratuity; with copied service papers.
