W. Cowan was born at Lasswade, Edinburgh, and enlisted on 19 May 1879, aged 20, a butcher by trade. He served in Egypt from 18 February to 7 July, 1885, and was discharged on 20 August 1891, having served 12 years, later living at East Dalkeith.
