5600 Pte D. Callahan. Middx: Regt.
Toned, a few light marks, good very fine.
Private D. Callahan is confirmed on the medal roll of the 2nd Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, having served in the Second Boer War, however his entry is almost entirely covered with detailed handwritten annotations. The ‘remarks’ column states: ‘Medal & 01.02 Iss’d. Off. E.C. Roll. Sentenced to 5 years penal servitude FG.C.’ and elsewhere is written ‘Medal & Clasps SA01 & 02 have been [lost?] by man. The clasps O.F.S. Trans & Natal will be issued after the Great War when the … … [?] replacement of lost medal & 01 & 02 will be considered. Man prefers this action. Medal Re-earned.’ A potentially interesting recipient and story. Online info shows that he was Court Martialled at Standerton 6th July 1901 whilst serving with the 2nd Middlesex Regt, 14th Mounted Infantry.
