British South Africa Company Medal, Rhodesia 1896, Colenbrander’s Cape Boys
Instituted 1895 by the Company for British and colonial forces for actions in Rhodesia1890-1897. Sanctioned by Victoria 1896 for service in the First and Second Matabele Wars (1893-1894 and 1896-1897), and Mashonaland campaign (1897). “Rhodesia / 1896” in raised letters upper reverse for that campaign in the Second Matabele War. Most went to colonial and local troops.

Members of the unit were described as “natives and half-castes from the Cape Colony, mostly English Speaking, and dressed”, Colenbrander is prominent in the region’s history.
