William Joseph Croake or Croke was born on 1st Dec 1836 at Kellenaule, Tipperary and enlisted at Clonmel, Tipperary at age 17 with the 13th Somerset Light Infantry. Served in the Crimea and was awarded the Medal with Sebastopol clasp. He transferred to the 70th Regiment on 1st March 1857 at Chatham.
In New Zealand he served at Wairu, Taranaki, Kaitake, Auckland, Waikato and Pukekohe.
