The Air Crew Europe Star was awarded to Royal Air Force operational personnel flying from airbases in England over Europe over a period of over two months, between 3rd September 1939 and 4th June 1944. During WW2, the Royal Air Force (RAF) Bomber Command suffered a high casualty rate, with 55,573 aircrew killed out of a total of 125,000. A death rate of 44.4% of aircrew were killed, 8,403 aircrew were wounded in action, and 9,838 became prisoners of war.
