The 1st North Western Railway Regiment was an auxiliary unit manned by staff of the North Western Railway. They frequently supported the regular army by manning armoured trains during times of conflict on the North West Frontier.
The recipient believed to be an Irishman working on the railways, given the surname. A G.R. O'Connor was awarded the Efficiency Medal whilst serving as a Private with 2nd Bn. Bombay, Baroda & Central India Railway Regt., A.F.I. 22 Dec 1933.
