105628 Private (8th Battalion, Saskatchewan Regiment) James Halfpenny (b.18th December 1896 in Midlothian, Scotland, UK) of Kennell, Saskatchewan was KIA on 5th July 1916 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, which bears the names of 55,000 men who were lost without trace during the defence of the Ypres Salient in the First World War. He was the son of Thomas and Mary Halfpenny who came from Midlothian, Scotland.

James was farming east of Craven, SK. when he enlisted at Regina late in 1915.

Three members of the 8th Battalion were awarded the Victoria Cross in WW1.
