George Ward was born in Selby Yorkshire, he had an interesting service. He was a Cook by civilian occupation. He received several Field Punishment No. 1 for various infractions – Refusing to obey an order, being absent etc. before he was seriously wounded on 22nd August 1916 in the shoulder and left eye. After hospitalization, he deserted for 30 plus days and was found by medical officers to be mentally defective on 9/11/1916, apparently due to a fall in a quarry when he was 6 years old ! He was discharged to Canada.
