Garfield Russell was born on 10th Sept. 1895 at Gravenhurst, Ontario. He attested on 22nd Feb. 1916 at Winnipeg, giving his occupation as a "Lather" (probably a Lathe Operator). Initially reported Missing in Action it was determined that he was Killed in Action on 9th April 1917 whilst serving with the 78th Battalion at the attack on Vimy Ridge. The cross was awarded to his mother who lived on Agnes Street, Winnipeg.
