James Smith was in Aberdeen, Scotland (1894), and was employed as a paper maker with one year experience serving in the militia. His wife was located in Mahebella, Bulowayo, South Africa. He enlisted at Valcartier on September 22, 1914. While serving with the 12th Reserve Battalion, Smith was hospitalized in Shorncliffe in January 17, 1916, with a contusion of both feet and right hand. On August 17, 1917, he was reported missing, however on the following day was reported to have rejoined the unit. On the 26th, Smith was admitted to the Chester War Hospital after being gassed. He survived the rest of the war, being demobilized in early 1919.
