Established in New York City in January 1941 by Sir William Stephenson, a Canadian businessman, who later received the code name "Intrepid." Ostensibly the office was set up to protect British shipping and war supplies in American ports, but this was a cover story. In reality BSC was a branch of the British Secret Intelligence Service tasked to subvert German espionage and propaganda activities in the United States, and to promote a pro-British attitude in America. The FBI was in close liaison with the BSC, and in fact the organization's name was suggested by J. Edgar Hoover. At the peak of its operations the BSC was a totally Canadian private army with close to 1,000 personnel. When the American OSS was created all of its initial personnel were trained at the BSC's spy school, "Camp X", near Oshawa, Ontario.
